DB Schenker is Cleaning Up Beaches to Raise Awareness on World Ocean Day
More than 100 employees participated in beach clean-ups• Collected more than 300kg of waste • Went to 6 beaches in Singapore and Malaysia
Celebrated annually on 8June, World Ocean Day serves as an important reminder of the collective responsibility of everyone to protect and conserve the ocean for future generations. Again, this year, DB Schenker is raising awareness about ocean conversation by cleaning the beaches in both Singapore and Malaysia.
70% of the planet is covered by oceans, home to most of the earth’s biodiversity and supporting the lives of billions around the world. The ocean plays a significant influence on Earth’s weather, mitigating climate change by absorbing around 30% of carbon dioxide produced by human activities. Despite the importance and reliance on the ocean, the treatment towards it is incomparable to what is taken from the seas. This year’s theme, Tides are Changing fits perfectly with the initiative by employees from Singapore and Malaysia to hit the beaches to clean up and remove litter. In both countries, DB Schenker conducted a total of 6 beach clean-ups, collecting more than 300 kg of plastic.
Benjamin Schatzl, Cluster Head Ocean for Singapore and Malaysia: “We truly want to save our oceans and I am very proud that we had over 100 local heroes who have taken action along our coastlines, embracing this year’s theme: Tides are Changing.”
Going beyond raising awareness, everyone has a shared responsibility to safeguard the ocean. It requires businesses to integrate sustainable practices into their operations and individuals to adopt an eco-conscious mindset in everyday life. As the backbone of world trade and a business that utilizes the ocean, DB Schenker has invested and is working with major carriers such as CMA CGM and MSC to decarbonize its ocean operations with biofuel. One of the largest biofuel deals signed by DB Schenker will allow up to 30,000 TEUs to be transported on the world’s ocean with net-zero emissions, which is equivalent to saving around 35,000 metric tons of CO2.
DB Schenker Singapore is also committed to reducing waste across its supply chain operations by promoting green initiatives such as eco-friendly pallet wrapping for shipments and upcycling waste materials into furniture through our award-winning upcycling hub.
