European Union extends emissions trading scheme to maritime transport and shipping companies
The European Union Parliament has decided to integrate shipping companies into the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2024.
The inclusion of the transport sector in the ETS is part of the EU's Green Deal Agenda and the Fit for 55 package to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% (compared to 1990 levels) by 2030.
The scheme aims to encourage companies to reduce their CO2 emissions by making it more advantageous to reduce emissions than to buy allowances.
This is how maritime transport will be integrated into the emissions trading scheme
Shipping companies will have to surrender allowances corresponding to their emissions according to the following timetable:
- In 2024, companies will have to surrender allowances for 40% of their verified emissions
- In 2025, companies must surrender allowances for 70% of their verified emissions.
- From 2026 onwards, allowances will be surrendered in full
The costs of the ETS will be passed on to shipping companies and ferry route users.
