Zero Waste to Landfill: DB SCHENKER in Indonesia Towards More Sustainable Operations
As part of our commitment to sustainability and responsible waste management, DB SCHENKER in Indonesia has officially launched the Zero Waste to Landfill program in April 2025. This initiative brings together internal teams and strategic partners to effectively manage waste and reduce environmental impact. The Zero Waste to Landfill initiative will be piloted at one of our sites, Cengkareng, paving the way for similar programs at other sites.
The program is a collaboration between team in Cengkareng, our Integrated Facility Management, PT Cakra Buana Resources Energi Consultancy Services, and our waste management partner, Waste4Change Indonesia. Their combined expertise ensures the development of sustainable waste management solutions.
How is the process carried out?
The process begins with waste collection and segregation. Waste is collected and separated into categories: organic waste like food scraps and fruit peels, paper waste such as cardboard and used beverage cartons, plastics, glass, metal, and residue including pallets, diapers and sanitary napkins.
Once collected, the waste undergoes processing and recycling. Organic waste is composted, paper waste is sent to paper factories, and recyclable glass, metal, and plastic are sent to respective recycling plants. Residual waste is either co-processed with Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) technology to convert it into alternative fuels or sent to landfill as a last resort.
To ensure its success, the program includes monitoring and evaluation through monthly waste journey reports, which consist of a waste timeline from start to end product, ensuring traceability and compliance with government regulations while aiming to minimize landfill waste.
