Intermodal transportation of delicate cargo to West Sulawesi for boiler manufacturer
DB SCHENKER Indonesia’s East Area team successfully completed a shipment to an area in West Sulawesi for a large manufacturer in boiler systems. In a country like Indonesia, with more than 17,000 islands, transportation of goods often requires multiple transport modes. In this case, land and intra-island sea transport.
The challenges for the shipment were the cargo size and the destination. The cargo, which carried new boiler system parts, required special care because even the slightest damage could render the boiler parts unusable. One of the massive components transported weighed 6,000 kg and measured 2.5 meters in length, 6 meters in width, and 3 meters in height.
Seamless Multimodal Intra-Island Transport
In the first leg of the project, starting from the customer’s origin in Sidoarjo, East Java, to Surabaya Port, the shipment travelled on land using five trucks. This included 30 feet and 40 feet open trucks because of their optimal load capacity, stability, and accessibility. The loading of the trucks required a lot of attention to detail, as the parts needed to remain intact for assembly.
Upon arrival at the loading port in Surabaya, the journey continued via ocean transportation with a RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessel. This is a specialized cargo ship for the transportation of vehicles and wheeled equipment, allowing for seamless loading and unloading. After 104 hours of intermodal freight transport over land and ocean, the cargo was offloaded at its destination in Pasangkayu, West Sulawesi.
Fitrisia Kartika Anwar, East Area Business Development Manager, commented: “The transportation infrastructure at the destination is very limited and this makes these types of projects quite complex. The risk of damaging the cargo during the loading and offloading makes it even more challenging. We thank our Surabaya and Balikpapan teams for the excellent teamwork. This, together with our high-quality logistics capabilities, helps us to improve accessibility within the region.”
Continuing the Journey
Following the successful shipment, we are excited to announce a forthcoming project in September. This ongoing collaboration is testament to our commitment in enhancing intra-island accessibility in Indonesia and nurturing enduring relationships with our valued customers.
