The Head of HSE & Security is responsible for leading the Health & Safety (HSE), Security, Dangerous Goods (DG), and Sustainability functions across the organization. The incumbent will drive strategic and tactical initiatives to ensure that safety, security, and sustainability objectives are met, in compliance with regulatory requirements, ISO standards, and the company’s goals. This leadership role involves collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to implement and oversee the effective management of HSE, Security, DG, and Sustainability practices within the organization.
As the Head of Department, the role requires versatility, resourcefulness, and the ability to adapt to the fast-paced environment of the 3PL industry. The incumbent will provide expert leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies and processes, ensuring a strong safety culture and operational excellence.
Specific Accountabilities:
- Development and Implementation of Policies and Procedures: Lead the creation, execution, and periodic review of comprehensive HSE, Security, DG, and Sustainability policies to ensure alignment with business objectives and compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
- ISO Management Systems Ownership: Oversee the maintenance and continuous improvement of the organization’s ISO9001 (Quality), ISO14001 (Environmental), and ISO45001 (Health & Safety) management systems. Ensure regular audits, reviews, and updates to ensure the effectiveness and alignment with best practices.
- Threat and Risk Assessment: Lead assessments to identify security threats, vulnerabilities, and HSE risks, developing proactive mitigation strategies to safeguard people, assets, and operations. Ensure the organization is prepared to handle emergency scenarios, including those involving dangerous goods.
- Leadership and Team Development: Lead and develop a team of HSE, security, and sustainability specialists, ensuring they have the necessary training, tools, and resources to effectively carry out their duties. Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement in line with the organization’s strategic goals.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with business units to provide subject matter expertise on HSE, security, DG, and sustainability matters. Support business development activities, including providing input for RFQs and customer engagements related to compliance and regulatory matters.
- Regulatory Compliance and Reporting: Act as the company’s primary liaison with regulatory authorities, industry bodies, and customers on matters related to HSE, security, dangerous goods, and sustainability. Ensure the company remains fully compliant with relevant regulations and standards at all times.
- Continuous Improvement: Cultivate a continuous improvement mindset by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, reduce risks, and improve the sustainability performance of the organization. Drive initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint and optimize HSE and security performance.
Skills Required:
- Health & Safety Expertise: In-depth knowledge and experience in managing Health & Safety systems and programs, including risk assessment, hazard identification, accident prevention, and compliance with local and international safety regulations.
- Security Management: Proven experience in security management, focusing on risk management, physical and information security, crisis management, and coordination with regulatory authorities to ensure the safety and security of company assets, employees, and stakeholders.
- Dangerous Goods Handling & Compliance: Expertise in the safe handling, storage, and transportation of dangerous goods (DG), including compliance with industry standards and regulations such as ADR, IATA, IMDG, and local government regulations.
- Sustainability Leadership: Strong background in sustainability initiatives, including environmental management, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and the integration of sustainable practices into business operations to support the organization’s long-term goals.
- Strategic Leadership: Ability to develop, communicate, and implement HSE and sustainability strategies that align with organizational objectives. Proficient in influencing leadership and cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with regulations and achieve business goals.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, Security Management, Sustainability, or a related field.
- Relevant Work Experience: A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in leadership roles overseeing Health & Safety, Security, Dangerous Goods, and Sustainability within large multinational organizations, preferably in the 3PL or logistics industry.
- ISO and Regulatory Standards Expertise: In-depth understanding and hands-on experience with ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001, and other relevant international standards. Additional certifications in TAPA, RCAR, C-TPAT, or similar standards will be a significant advantage.
- Leadership and Team Management: Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and driving significant improvements in safety, security, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
- Additional Expertise: Experience in risk management, emergency response planning, sustainability programs, and dangerous goods compliance.
