Joining Forces for Logistics

DB Schenker and TU Darmstadt establish DB Schenker Lab. DB Schenker funds junior professorships.

Darmstadt Technical University (TU Darmstadt) and DB Schenker are expanding their partnership: TU president Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel and DB Management Board Member Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch agreed on Monday to establish a DB Schenker laboratory (“DB Schenker Lab”) at TU Darmstadt. DB Schenker will fund two professorships for the lab.

The two partners are expanding research and teaching in transportation and logistics at TU Darmstadt through the new cooperative institute. The two new professorships funded by DB Schenker will be dedicated to logistics planning and information systems and to multimodality and logistics technology. In addition to its research activities, DB Schenker Lab will develop teaching and further education offerings for TU Darmstadt students and DB Schenker employees. The cooperation agreement has initially been signed for roughly eight years. The management of DB Schenker Lab will consist of an equal number of managers from each partner.

“Founding DB Schenker Lab is the next logical step in the innovation alliance between Darmstadt Technical University and Deutsche Bahn, a partnership that has been a resounding success over the years. TU Darmstadt’s first cooperative institute, DB Schenker Lab will foster a lively exchange and direct feedback with the business world and will bring the partners even closer together,” said TU president Prömel.

“We are extremely delighted that we are continuing to expand our cooperation with TU Darmstadt to press ahead together with landmark transportation and logistics projects,” said Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Member of the Management Board of DB Mobility Logistics AG responsible for Transportation and Logistics. Cooperation between TU Darmstadt and Deutsche Bahn began back in 2009 and is based on the three pillars of teaching, research and development, and junior staff recruitment. The close relationship between the university and Deutsche Bahn in the context of the new cooperative institute is intended to ensure scientific findings make a rapid transition to practical applications. Deutsche Bahn awards TU Darmstadt students scholarships and internships and provides topics for projects, while its executives offer teaching support by giving lectures.
